Alberta resort town decides to stop pursuing city status

Sylvan Lake has decided not to pursue city status.

The council of the central Alberta resort town on its namesake lake 20 kilometres west of Red Deer decided against moving ahead with acquiring city status on Tuesday after reviewing a report prepared by administration’s economic department.

Administration had previously brought up the idea of Sylvan Lake gaining city status four years ago, which council then passed on but would consider it later.

Sylvan Lake has a population of 17,897, up from 15,995 in 2021.

The report pointed out potential added costs of becoming a city, including responsibility for maintaining highways within city limits, that only one provincial grant would become available to Sylvan Lake if it had city status, that it would have to possibly create a public transit system and that it would have to change some signage and forms.

“The discussion confirmed that becoming a city would offer little practical benefit, while introducing potential risks — including risks of infrastructure responsibilities and the loss of certain grant funding opportunities.” Mayor Megan Hanson said in a media release.

“Council also emphasized that municipal status alone does not change service levels, taxation, or community identity. We’re proud of Sylvan Lake’s strong sense of place and we’re confident that continuing as the Town of Sylvan Lake best serves residents’ interests for the foreseeable future.”

Sylvan Lake is one of 105 towns in Alberta, while there are 19 municipalities that have city status. Representatives elected to council at large in town elections, while cities have the option to establish a ward system.
