Calgary man faces kidnapping, firearms charges in Fort McMurray

A Calgary man has been charged with kidnapping and several firearms offences last week in Fort McMurray.

The charges against Saad Khan, 39, were laid after a man who was a passenger in a vehicle north of Fort McMurray on May 19 told police the driver started to threaten him and pointed a handgun at him, Wood Buffalo RCMP said in a Tuesday media release. The passenger said he managed to grab the steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, and allowing the man to jump from it and flee to a nearby truck stop for help.

Police said the driver left the scene in a silver 2015 Toyota Venza but were unable to locate him that day.

On Wednesday, police found the vehicle they suspected was used by the driver in an alley off Fort McMurray’s Walnut Crescent, conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver.

RCMP charged Khan, who is in custody awaiting his next court date on June 1, with nine offences, including kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement, uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Fort McMurray is 380 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
