Suspect in custody following fatal stabbing on Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation

An investigation is underway into a fatal stabbing that took place Saturday on the Alexis Nakota Nation.

Responding to reports of a stabbing at a residence on the First Nation, Mayerthorpe RCMP located the 28-year-old victim, Elzeare Cardinal, who was dead.

The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit was deployed and took over the investigation, which included support from the Mayerthorpe detachment, Parkland police dog service and Edson Forensic Identification Service.

Officers arrested 33-year-old Dalton Earl Cardinal, who was charged with second-degree homicide.

The charges have not been tested in court.

Cardinal was remanded into custody. He’s scheduled to appear in court in Mayerthorpe on Feb. 13.
