Man accused in Chinatown killings refuses to participate in 2nd mental fitness assessment

The man accused of killing two men in unprovoked attacks in Edmonton’s Chinatown has refused to take part in a second not criminally responsible assessment.

Justin Bone is charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of Ban Phuc Hoang, 61, and Hung Trang, 64, in separate incidents on May 18, 2022.

In an Edmonton courtroom on Friday he apologized and told the justice the first NCR assessment contained hearsay and lies and said based on past experience with that assessment he didn’t want to take part in a second assessment.

The Crown said it intends to call a final witness before closing its case.

It’s not clear if Bone’s lawyer will call any evidence.

The trial, which started in January, will resume in June.
