Increased risk of flooding for central Alberta with up to 60mm of rain expected over the weekend

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for central Alberta as the area is expected to see between 30 to 60 millimeters of rain by Sunday.

“With the ground already saturated from the storm this past weekend and with rainfall total for the month of June well above normal, additional rain will increase the risk of overland flooding, washouts and potential impacts to infrastructure,” said a statement from Environment Canada Wednesday afternoon.

However, the agency said the heaviest rain is forecast to fall in a narrow band, potentially leading to more localized impacts than what were seen last weekend. The exact area expected to see the most rainfall will become clearer closer to the weather event.

Another system is forecast for Sunday night and early next week that could see heavy rainfall in central Alberta.

Environment Canada said rainfall warnings are likely and will be issued closer to as forecast confidence increases.

While the weather is warm and dry for the next couple of days, the agency advises that people assess further risk and prepare for more rainfall.

Several areas in central Alberta, including the City of Edmonton, issued weather alerts asking residents to watch their water use as wastewater systems became overwhelmed during last weekend’s storm.

The last time the Edmonton area saw more rain in June was more than a century ago and June 2026 will likely break that record.
