Lethbridge’s new vulnerable person registry: what it is and what it does

The Lethbridge Police Service has launched a new Vulnerable Person Registry in an effort to protect the city’s most vulnerable.

The registry is free and voluntary.

It’s a way for people to provide key information – like their medical conditions, emergency contacts, preferred communication methods and sensory preferences – with police, to help enhance their safety and wellbeing during emergencies.

“When we equip our officers with detailed, individualized information, we ensure that they can address complicated situations in a way that maintains the dignity and respect of everyone involved,” said Lethbridge Police Service Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh.

The registry, spearheaded by Const. Karly Easter, is designed for those who live, work and/or attend school in Lethbridge.

“Whether it’s locating a non-verbal individual who has gone missing, or managing an emergency where someone may need more assistance … We want to make sure that our approach meets their needs,” Easter explained.

“When time allows, this tool will help us de-escalate tension, coordinate resources and restore safety as quickly as possible.”

Those who register will be issued a card and decal that helps police recognize registrants and more easily reach out to their emergency contacts.
