Calgary families embrace Family Day with skating, music, and helping the homeless

The bitter cold this Family Day long weekend didn't stop many Calgary families from enjoying the time with their loved ones.

Calgarians embraced Family Day in a variety of ways Monday, from hitting the ice to exploring musical history, with many also contributing to a cause supporting families in need.

Heather Park shared a special Family Day tradition with her daughter at WinSport.

“She used to be little, and now she’s big,” said Park.

“It’s fun to get out and just get some exercise. It’s kind of our family tradition to go skating on Family Day.”

The family skate was hosted by Hockey Helps the Homeless in partnership with Inn from the Cold, aiming to raise funds for families facing housing shortages and the rising cost of living.

“If we can bring a group of people together and have them care about something that’s really going to make a difference in people’s lives, it helps everyone,” said Emma Langlois, Senior Business Development Manager of Hockey Helps the Homeless.

“We’re hoping to really inspire some folks to connect with that cause and make a difference, not just today, but year-round.”

Hundreds participated in the event, raising tens of thousands of dollars for initiatives supporting the organizations.

“Hockey Helps the Homeless actually runs the event and then gives us the money, [Inn From the Cold] is the beneficiary,” said Ron Smith, manager of fund development at Inn from the Cold.

“At this moment in time, the greatest need is housing. On any given night, about 120 families are in the care of the Inn. Again, that number continues to grow.”

While the chilly temperatures kept some away from the WinSport ski hill, the halfpipe saw dozens of snowboarders enjoying the brisk air.

Many families also opted for indoor activities, with Studio Bell offering a warm and engaging alternative.

There was free admission and live music.

“Come together as a community, experience music, learn about the history of music and each other,” said Stephanie Hutchinson, director of programs at Studio Bell.
