Blam! Kapow! WHOOSH! Calgary Expo parade cancelled over strong winds

High winds have forced a major change to one of Calgary Expo’s biggest events.

Organizers have cancelled the Parade of Wonders, which was set to move through downtown Friday morning, citing safety concerns tied to the weather.

Environment Canada says northwest winds could reach 50 km/h, gusting up to 80 km/h, conditions that can create hazards for large outdoor gatherings, especially moving events involving costumes, props and crowds.

Instead of the parade, organizers are now hosting the “Party of Wonders” at Stampede Park.

“This decision was not made lightly, but made with the safety of participants as first priority, and in accordance with recommendations from trusted production partners. While the parade portion of the celebration will not happen, the party will!” Expo officials said in a news release late Thursday.

The event will take place at the BMO Centre Plaza and Grand Staircase, starting at 10:30 a.m., and will include a fan dance party led by DJ Thug Shells.

Opening ceremonies are still scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and will feature celebrity guests from Calgary Expo.

Downtown safety issues

Organizers say the decision to cancel the parade was made with safety as the top priority.

The wind has already caused issues in the downtown core.

Police closed part of Second Avenue S.W. Thursday evening after pieces of metal fell from a Plus 15 connecting the Devon and Millennium towers.

The Calgary Fire Department’s technical rescue team was called in to secure the area.

No injuries or additional property damage were reported.

Snow still forecasted

Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement warning of possible heavy snow Friday night into Saturday morning. Some areas could see five to 10 centimetres of snow, along with blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Officials warn conditions could change quickly and are advising people to prepare for deteriorating travel conditions.

Despite the change, Calgary Expo events will continue, with organizers encouraging fans to gather indoors and take part in the revised celebration.
