Beloved ‘blond’ bear leaving Calgary Zoo in June

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has announced the impending departure of one of its more unique animals.

Manuka, a black bear with a blond coat, will be leaving the facility in June to travel to “another accredited zoological facility,” the zoo announced in a social media post on Friday.

“This move is part of long-term planning decision and collaboration with other Canadian zoos.”

In anticipation of her move, Manuka’s viewing schedule will be adjusted starting this Saturday.

Officials say she’ll be in the Wild Canada bear habitat on weekends only, as training allows, leading up to her departure.

Manuka, a 15-year-old female, came to the zoo in 2013.

Her name is a reference to her special colour, which looks like manuka honey.
