Significant weather events declared amid winter storm

Several towns in Simcoe Muskoka and upper York Region have declared significant weather events in response to the ongoing winter storm passing through the region and Windsor Corridor this weekend.

The District Municipality of Muskoka, Bracebridge, Midland, Newmarket and Georgina have issued significant weather events, citing treacherous conditions and extended time required for road maintenance operations.

“A Significant Weather Event is declared when there is an approaching or occurring weather hazard with the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the roadways within a municipality,” explained James Steele, commissioner of engineering and public works at the District of Muskoka, via the district’s website. “It is essential that residents stay off the roads, and only travel, if necessary, until the event is declared over, and normal service levels and operations are back in place.”

Townships that are under significant weather events include Tiny, Springwater and Minden Hills among others.

Drivers are urged to give snow removal crews space to operate and are reminded that parking restrictions are in place for areas that impede plows.

Penetanguishene and Midland’s declarations from Friday are still in effect. Most declarations that have been issued will remain in effect until further notice.
