Drivers told not to pick up hitchhikers after occupants may have fled Highway 11 crash: OPP

Provincial police advised drivers about an increased presence along Highway 11 just north of Barrie overnight as officers continued investigating the scene of a crash.

In a 3:49 a.m. social media post, Orillia OPP warned that there was an increased police presence on the east side of the highway between Penetanguishene Road and Line 2 South.

Police say there was a crash and an ongoing investigation. No injuries were reported.

In a 4:50 a.m. update, drivers were asked to not pick up hitchhikers or make unnecessary stops as the investigation continued. The right lane of Highway 11 northbound was closed in the area.

In a 6:30 a.m. update, the OPP confirmed that all lanes had reopened and that the situation returned to ‘normal.’

An OPP public information advisor (PIA) told CTV News on Sunday that multiple vehicles had been involved in the crash, and that one or more occupants may have fled the scene before officers arrived.

“The OPP would also like to remind the public that picking up individuals who are unknown to you, or stopping unnecessarily for strangers in unfamiliar locations, can carry inherent risks,” said the Orillia detachment via the PIA. “Members of the public are encouraged to prioritize their personal safety and, if assistance appears to be required, contact police rather than intervening directly.”

No charges have been laid in the incident yet, but the investigation remains ongoing.
