OPP responds to dozens of collisions forcing multiple road closures

Several roads are closed in Dufferin County due to the inclement weather on Monday, prompting a message from provincial police to the public to stay put if at all possible.

Police say they have responded to dozens of collisions across the county as blowing snow makes visibility “next to impossible.”

“We recognize that everyone wants to get out after these last couple days of being snowed in, and we understand wanting to see family on Family Day, BUT, please, unless needed, stay home,” Dufferin OPP posted on social media Monday afternoon.

“The wind is expected to get much worse,” police added.

Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for the county, with snowfall accumulations of 30 to 60 centimetres that is expected to continue through Tuesday. The weather agency echoed the message from police to postpone unnecessary travel.

The road closures include:

- Amaranth East Luther Townline

- County Road 124- Shelburne to Collingwood

- County 16- Broadway to 5 Sideroad

- 2nd Line SW from Hwy 89 to Dundalk

“If you must go out, check road and weather updates before leaving, driving cautiously, and allow for extra time,” OPP added.

Just after 6 p.m., police posted an image of several vehicles stuck along County Road 124 “within 500m of one another,” with another urge to residents to “stay safe indoors.”
