Ont. man pleads guilty to sexual interference, preying on girls 13-15 when he was 21

A Severn Township man who supplied alcohol to teenage girls and admitted to sexually violating a 14-year-old girl has taken a plea deal.

Ty Arends, who turns 23 in July, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual interference, admitting he sexually violated a 14-year-old girl who believed he was 17 at the time.

Covering his face with a medical mask before removing it inside the Orillia courthouse, Arends admitted to hanging out with girls who were between 13 and 15 when he was 21 in the spring and summer of 2024.

As part of an Agreed Statement of Facts read by the Crown, Arends, the court heard, got the 14-year-old girl drunk had 12 drinks and tried to get physical with her. She told him twice to stop. After the girl had fallen asleep on a couch, Arends carried her to his bedroom and violated her.

The next day, the court heard, the girl told her friends what Arends had done to her. Later that day Arends invited the girl to his parents’ bedroom and she said no. Still, Arends carried the girl to the bedroom and violated her again. A few weeks later she learned he was 21.

The court heard from two other teens, 13- and 15-year-old girls with similar stories. Arends provided alcohol to the 13-year-old girl, who claimed he never drank. When confronted by others about hanging out with the girl, Arends said he didn’t care that she was 13.

The court heard a 15-year-old said she later met Arends on Snapchat, telling her he was 17. She admitted to kissing Arends and being grabbed by him. Eventually she learned he was lying about his age.

A month later he was arrested and granted bail in October 2024 to a surety who pledged $7,000 to get him out of jail.

Arends is scheduled to return to court in May to set a date for his sentencing hearing.
