14-year-old found with knife after complaint at high school prompts lockdown: OPP

Officials say they have crisis plans in place to protect Edmonton students, including keeping school doors locked throughout the day.

A 14-year-old is facing charges after police say the teen was found with a knife following an investigation at a high school in Haliburton.

Provincial police officers were called to Haliburton Highlands Secondary School Friday morning just after nine about a weapon complaint, prompting a lockdown order at the school.

Police say they learned the teen had left school property, and officers located the youth a short distance away.

The teen was taken into custody and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, and theft.

While it’s unclear if there was an altercation of any sort at the school, police say no injuries were reported.

The 14-year-old is scheduled to appear in court at a future date to answer to the charges. The teen’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A lockdown is issued in serious situations where there is a potential threat inside a school or very near to a school property. During a lockdown, students and staff are to remain out of sight and take shelter, with lights turned off and blinds drawn. All interior and exterior doors are locked to prevent entry or exit from the building.
