Two wanted people arrested after assaulting officers, trying to flee: N.S. RCMP

A man and woman have been charged with outstanding arrest warrants and new offences after police say they tried to flee officers in Berwick, N.S.

Kings District RCMP learned the wanted people were at a home on Buchanan Road around 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived at the residence, the RCMP says they saw the man and woman in a parked car in the driveway.

“When a police vehicle pulled in behind the car, the driver, identified as Kyle Trahan, put the car into reverse and rammed the police vehicle while an officer was inside,” reads a news release from RCMP. “Trahan then attempted to drive through the yard off the property after being told he was under arrest and to exit the vehicle.”

The car came to a stop when it hit a fence, but police say Trahan still refused to exit the vehicle, “and assaulted the police officers on scene as they attempted to remove him.”

Officers used a taser and Trahan was taken into custody.

Police identified the passenger as April Schofield of New Minas, N.S. According to the release, she exited the car on foot and fled from officers.

Police dogs and drones supported the pursuit and Schofield was found around 6:50 p.m. in a residence on Buchanan Road.

Trahan, 28, from Aylesford, N.S., is charged with 17 new offences including:

• assaulting a peace officer
• assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
• several driving offences
• five counts of failing to comply with a release order

He was previously wanted on warrants for assault, break and enter, theft of mail and failing to comply with a release order.

Schofield, 37, is charged with:

• resisting/obstructing a peace officer
• mischief
• break and enter
• four counts of failing to comply with a release order

She was previously wanted on a warrant for breaking and entering and assault.

Trahan and Schofield had their first court appearances on Monday at Kentville provincial court. They remain in custody pending future court appearances.
