Two charged after Amherst, N.S., police allegedly find them asleep in vehicle with weapons

Two people are facing charges after police in Amherst, N.S., allegedly found them asleep in a vehicle with weapons earlier this week.

Amherst police responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Anson Avenue around 2 a.m. Monday.

Officers found the vehicle with two people who appeared to be asleep inside.

“Police noted what appeared to be a handgun in the vehicle. As a result, both parties were arrested and as a result of a search incident to arrest, police also located an assortment of suspected controlled substances and other weapons,” said the Amherst Police Department in a news release.

Vincent Mallory, 40, of Amherst is facing the following charges:

• two counts of possession of a weapon
• possession of a weapon/ammunition in a vehicle
• possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
• three counts of possession of a controlled substance
• five counts of failure to comply with a release order
• possession of property obtained by crime

Barbara VanSnick, 43, of Amherst is facing the following charges:

• possession of a weapon
• possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
• possession of controlled substance

Police also issued several tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Mallory and VanSnick were held in custody overnight and appeared in court on Monday.

VanSnick was released on conditions and is due back in court on June 1.

Mallory remains in custody and is due back in court on April 21 for a show cause hearing.
