Alert warning of man with machete in Gaetz Brook, N.S., cancelled, police still looking for man

A public advisory about a man with a machete in Gaetz Brook, N.S., Tuesday night has been cancelled.

An emergency alert about a man with a machete in Gaetz Brook, N.S., Tuesday night has been cancelled, but police say they are still looking for the man.

“Investigators continue efforts to locate the man, who has been identified,” said Cpl. Mandy Edwards in an emailed statement to CTV News Atlantic Wednesday morning.

“At this time, we have no information to support criminal charges and do not believe he poses a risk to public safety.”

Police said Tuesday night the man was last seen in the wooded area near 46 Petpeswick Dr.

Residents in the area were asked to seek shelter or stay inside and close and lock doors and windows around 8 p.m.

The RCMP was also asking people to not pick up hitchhikers and not disclose police locations.

The alert was cancelled around 11:30 p.m.

“As a result of ongoing investigative efforts, officers no longer believe there’s a risk to public safety. The Alert for Gaetz Brook has been cancelled. Investigators remain in the area as they continue to search for the man. Residents no longer need to shelter in place,” reads a release from the RCMP.
