Nova Scotia coordinates with 10 community groups in new HomeShare program

Nova Scotia is connecting people with disabilities with support in homes.

The Nova Scotia government is working with 10 community-based service providers to support people with disabilities through the new HomeShare program.

The program, which launched last January, aims to help people with disabilities live in shared homes with a provider in their communities. The province is spending $2.13 million on the program, which is part of the five-year Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy.

Ten community groups are reviewing applicants to the program. They will screen providers and offer ongoing support to participants.

“These organizations bring deep community knowledge, trusted relationships and experience supporting people with disabilities,” said Premier Tim Houston in a news release. “Together with the Province, they will help ensure HomeShare is delivered safely, thoughtfully and in a way that reflects the needs and strengths of each region.”

The provincial government is spending $180 million this fiscal year on the Human Rights Remedy, which seeks to address systemic discrimination in how Nova Scotia supports people with disabilities by the end of March 2028.
