Blue Nose Marathon draws thousands of runners to Halifax streets

Thousand laced-up in Halifax for the Bluenose Marathon.

Thousands of runners pounded the pavement in Halifax over the weekend as the Blue Nose Marathon returned with races ranging from the relay and 10-kilometre runs to the full marathon.

Despite a cloudy and rainy start to the day, runners and supporters lined the streets early Sunday morning, ringing cowbells, waving homemade signs and cheering participants toward the finish line.

Among the crowd were friends and family members supporting loved ones taking part in the event. One supporter said several people in her group were running different races, including a half-marathon being completed as a birthday celebration.

Volunteers stationed along the route worked to keep spirits high as runners tackled the course through the city.

As the morning went on, the weather improved, with rain clouds eventually giving way to sunnier skies while runners crossed the finish line.

“Fantastic day, beautiful day, good weather. The volunteers were cheering us on the whole way, it was awesome,” said one runner.

Participants described the course as challenging but rewarding, with hills throughout Halifax adding to the difficulty of the race.

“It was very hilly, but lots of fun. We travelled from very to be here. It was a beautiful run,” said another.

For many runners, the event represented more than competition.

“It’s community, celebration, and sometimes proof you can do hard things,” one participant said after completing the course.

Relay runners also highlighted the teamwork involved in the event, describing the excitement of passing the baton between teammates across different sections of the city.

“I passed the baton on to my colleague and she took it up the north end,” said one of the relay runners.

Others spoke about the months of preparation leading up to race day.

“I did my training with my girlfriend. We did a lot of long runs once a week. Probably tried to run 80 km a week for six to eight weeks. It was a lot of long runs in the rain through the hills of Halifax.”

Thousands participated in events throughout the weekend, with runners travelling from across Atlantic Canada and beyond to take part in the annual marathon festivities.
