Woman arrested for stealing wallet containing ‘large sum of currency’ in Saint John: police

Police in Saint John, N.B., say a woman is in custody following an assault and robbery in the city’s uptown Saturday afternoon.

A 74-year-old woman withdrew a “large sum of currency” from an ATM in the King Street area around 2 p.m.

Police say another woman assaulted her and stole her wallet with the money inside before fleeing on foot.

Officers then responded to the area and began looking for the suspect.

Police say a 43-year-old woman matching the description of the suspect was later found at a bar in the north end.

She was arrested for robbery and taken into custody around 2:45 p.m.

Police say the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The accused, who has not been identified, appeared in court on Monday and was charged with robbery.

She was remanded into jail and is scheduled to return to court on Thursday for a bail hearing.
