New Brunswick to officially launch new virtual health-care service on June 30

After a delay earlier this year and criticism from the official opposition, the New Brunswick government is officially launching its new virtual health-care service at the end of the month.

Virtual Care NB will take over from eVisitNB on June 30. The service will offer scheduled appointments via video or phone, replacing the virtual waiting room model. It will be available to all New Brunswickers with a valid medicare card.

Last February, the provincial government originally announced eVisitNB would cease as the virtual care provider by March 31, but they later issued a 90-day extension.

The New Brunswick government previously said it signed a two-year deal with Foundever Assistance Services Corp. to provide virtual care for the province with an annual budget of $12.9 million. The official opposition criticized the move, citing the company’s recent credit downgrade.

The province says the virtual care providers will be able to assess and treat many common illnesses and injuries.

“This approach integrates virtual care within the broader health-care system and helps ensure patients are connected to the most appropriate care for their needs,” said Health Minister John Dornan in the release. “Linking virtual care with existing services will help New Brunswickers navigate the health-care system and access the right care, at the right time, by the right provider.”
