N.B reveals five-year plan to reduce income poverty by 50 per cent

The New Brunswick government has unveiled its multi-year plan to reduce income poverty in the province by at least 50 per cent by 2030.

The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation released “Overcoming Poverty Together 4: The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Plan 2025-2030” on Wednesday. The corporation developed the plan by speaking with nearly 5,000 people last year.

“This plan was built by New Brunswickers, for New Brunswickers, and I am incredibly proud to be able to share it today,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles, who is also minister responsible for the corporation. “This plan serves as a road map to a New Brunswick where every person can build a good life, where they have equitable access to services and benefits provided with compassion and dignity, and where they have a chance to flourish in their culture and community.”

Eighty-five-thousand New Brunswickers are living in poverty according to data from 2022.

The new plan, which is in line with Canada’s “Opportunity for All” poverty reduction plan, focuses on

-basic needs such as food security, child care, housing and transportation services

-income security such as financial literacy, improving working conditions for people with low income and reviewing asset exemption thresholds

-strengthening people-centric service delivery

The plan does not have a specific financial commitment or dollar figure.
