Many schools in the Maritimes closed, delay opening following heavy snow

Cleanup operations are underway Thursday after a low-pressure system brought heavy snow and slick conditions to much of the Maritimes Wednesday.

There are currently no weather alerts in effect for the region, though CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says Thursday will be cold and gusty. There is also a risk of snow squalls in the Cape Breton Highlands throughout the day.

School closures

Schools are cancelled across Cape Breton and northern mainland Nova Scotia Thursday. Schools in the Annapolis Valley are on a two-hour delay. Schools across Prince Edward Island are on a one-hour delay.

There are no school closures in New Brunswick. A full list can be found here.

Government delays

All P.E.I. civil service offices will delay opening until 10:30 a.m.

Charlottetown City Hall and administrative offices will open at 9:30 a.m.

Transportation

The Halifax Regional Municipality said at 7 a.m. that snow-clearing operations are active across the region, with crews focused on Priority 1 areas.

“Most main roads are passable with detail work ongoing,” reads a post on the municipality’s website.

The Halifax Public Gardens were closed Thursday morning for snow-clearing operations. It has since reopened.

The Confederation Bridge says wind conditions may result in restrictions of traffic between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

511 said at 8:30 a.m. the LaHave Ferry was suspended due to weather.

The Halifax Regional Municipality says the overnight winter parking ban has been lifted in both Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central.
